The passion for Drama and Theatre runs deep in Humankind and its appeal has remained universal it appears. Before there were cinemas and multiplexes there was the travelling Theatre!
From a rural town in Andhra Pradesh, Southern India, comes this ancient craft that offers Story-telling that is now best displayed on walls as Art.
They bring to life a myriad of Characters from Animal and Human lives. Yes, well before The Lion King and Simba and Nala….. who also have their roots in the same Indian ethos of celebrating Nature and all Creation with a unique equivalency.
Animals are animate… and bring wonder and deep emotion to human lives. This video is part of a series that offers glimpses of the fabulous artworks and creatures that come alive now only by way of Wall-art as Puppetry has now become well-near extinct as an art form.
In addition to the animals the major performing awe-inspiring Characters all come from the Great Epics, the Mahabharata and the Ramayana, telling profound stories of human virtue, vice, trysts and endeavours. Of duty to family, country, Nature and oneself in ones own quest for Dharma and the understanding of ones place in the social and cosmic context.
There are Heroes, Heroic intent and human fallacies….
Puppetry was the way entertainment took place. It was a whole industry. There were the equivalent of Producers, Directors, Creative Artists, Script-writers, Voice-overs… and of course, Sets and costumes has to be made!!
These hugely creative and well-thought through Acts were introduced with fan-fare on a stage set against a suitable backdrop facing either a select audience of the Aristocratic or the communities of town and village.
