Purva: East India

The Eastern Coastline gives us the Assamese Mekhla, the Sambhalpuri and Balucheri with tales of the epics woven into the borders and striking colour combinations, the Dhakai Mulmul and the Tanth Saree. Most coveted for the embroidery and mastery of needlework is the Kantha saree with motifs in fabulous colors. Each has a strong and comes from a long tradition with deep cultural moorings.

Dakshina: South India

The Southern Indian collage for Sarees includes the fabulously rich Kanjeevarams, Gadhwals, Venkatgiri, Pochampally, Naryanipet, Pattu Saree, the Coimbatore Cottons and so on. Each has its strong cultural symbolism and often are specific to occasions, with distinct colour combinations and motifs that lend meaning to every piece. The most famous remains the Kanjeevarm for their rich, lustrous silk, golden thread or zari work and the celebrated temple weave that holds the heavy borders to the main body of the saree.
